Parris Island

Part of the Sea Islands group, in southern-central South Carolina, USA, on Port Royal Sound, 11 km/7 mi south of mainland Beaufort; population (1990) 7,200. Extending 10 km/6 mi in length, it lies south of Port Royal Island, west of St Helena Island, and northeast of Hilton Head Island. Used for military purposes since the American Civil War, Parris Island became the US Marine Corps Recruit Depot, a basic training facility, in 1915.

The Spanish attempted to settle here in 1526. French Huguenots led by Jean Ribaut (c. 1520–1565) also tried to establish a community in 1562, but moved on to build Fort Charles on the present site of nearby Port Royal.
