Parry Sound

Port and resort in Parry Sound District, southern-central Ontario, Canada, on an inlet of Georgian Bay, 195 km/121 mi northwest of Toronto; population (1991) 6,100. It is situated almost halfway between Toronto and Sudbury on the railway and Trans-Canadian Highway. A thriving commercial port, it is now also the boating gateway to the bay's Thirty Thousand Islands vacation area. Visitor attractions include fishing, diving, and summer music festivals. Laid out in 1867, Parry Sound was a major lumbering centre until supplies diminished.
