agonist

In biology, a muscle that contracts and causes a movement. Contraction of an agonist is complemented by relaxation of its antagonist. For example, the biceps (in the front of the upper arm) bends the elbow while the triceps (lying behind the biceps) straightens the arm.

agonist

In medicine, a drug or other substance that has a similar effect to normal chemical messengers in the body through its actions at receptor sites of cells. Examples are sympathomimetic drugs that mimic the actions of adrenaline and are used in the treatment of certain heart disorders.
