Paschal II (died 1118)

Pope, 1099-1118. He reigned during the periods of the investiture contest, bringing him into conflict with the Holy Roman emperors Henry IV and Henry V, as well as Henry I of England. He was seized and imprisoned by Henry V in 1111 but released on a promise to restore the right of investiture. He withdrew his promise later and excommunicated the emperor in 1112. He was born in Galeata, near Ravenna, Italy.
