Pascin, Jules

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.03 sec.

Pascin, Jules (1885–1930)

Bulgarian-born US painter. His sensual studies of women have soft, hazy colours and fluid lines. A typical example is Claudine Resting 1923 (Chicago Institute of Art). He also painted portraits and biblical and mythological works.

He studied in Vienna and then Munich, where he contributed to the satirical journal Simplicissimus. In 1905 he moved to Paris, where he continued to work as an illustrator. In 1914 he moved to the USA and became a US citizen, but returned to Paris 1920.

His studies of women, often gently and ironically erotic, derive in part from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
