Pashchenko, Andrey Filipovich (1883–1972)

Russian composer. He entered the St Petersburg Conservatory in 1914, after receiving private musical instruction, and studied composition under Maksimilian Steinberg and Joseph Wihtol. He was active as teacher and music organizer, but devoted most of his time to composition. During World War II he remained at Leningrad throughout the siege.

The Revolt of the Eagles (1925), Emperor Maximilian (1927), The Black Cliff (1931), The Pompadours (after Saltikov-Shtchedrin's story, 1939), The Stubborn Bride (1956), Radda and Loyko (after Gorki's story Makar Tchudra, 1957).

Oratorios

The Liberation of Prometheus, Lenin.

Orchestral

film music; Requiem in memory of the heroes of the great war; 15 symphonies (1915–70); Solemn Polonaise; Festive Overture; symphonic poems The Giants and The Bacchantes; scherzo Harlequin and Columbine; suite in the Classical Style; Legend for orchestra.

Other

three pieces for a band of folk instruments; nine string quartets; songs.
