Paskalis, Kostas (1929– )

Greek baritone. He studied in Athens where he made his debut in 1951, as Rigoletto. Wider recognition came in 1958 with his performance of Renato at the Vienna Staatsoper, and in 1964 he sang Macbeth at Glyndebourne. Between 1969 and 1972 he appeared in London, at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Iago and Scarpia. He made his New York debut in 1965, at the Metropolitan Opera House, as the La forza del destino Carlos. The following year he created Pentheus in The Bassarids, at Salzburg. He sang Don Giovanni with New Jersey Opera (1988), and became director of the National Opera of Greece in the same year.
