Pastaza

Province in eastern Ecuador, within the region known as Oriente; area 34,000 sq km/13,127 sq mi; population (1996) 55,739. The provincial capital is Puyo, the principal town of the Oriente. Oil exploration and extraction is the main economic activity in the region. Rainforest tourism is also an important growth area.

Until 1959, Pastaza was joined with the neighbouring province of Napo.
