Pathé, Charles (1863-1957)

French film pioneer. He began his career selling projectors in 1896 and with the profits formed Pathé Frères with his brother Emile. In 1901 he embarked on film production and by 1908 had become the world's biggest producer, with branches worldwide. He also developed an early colour process and established a weekly newsreel, Pathé Journal.

During World War I he faced stiff competition from the USA, and his success in Europe suffered as a consequence of the war. In 1929 he handed over control of his company, which continued to produce a large number of films after his retirement.
