Pathein

Port in the Irrawaddy delta in Myanmar, capital of Irrawaddy division, 125 km/78 mi from the sea; population (2000 est) 215,500. There are transport links inland both through the Irrawaddy waterways and by rail, via the Pyay-Yangon railway. The port principally trades in rice. Pathein was founded in the 13th century, and has become the fifth-largest city in Myanmar.
