Patterson, Colin (1933-1998)

English palaeontologist whose work on fossil classification by evolutionary relationship using paraphyletics (the creation of taxonomic groups that include some, but not all, of the descendants of a common ancestor) was influential in reforming the fossil record.

Patterson was born in Hammersmith, London, and attended university at Imperial College, London. He spent most of his working life at the London Natural History Museum.
