Paumgartner, Bernhard (1887–1971)

Austrian musicologist and composer. He studied first with his parents, the critic Hans Paumgartner and the singer Rosa Paumgartner (born Papier), and afterwards with Bruno Walter. He was director of the Mozarteum at Salzburg 1917–38, and was one of the organizers of the Salzburg festivals; his editions of Mozart's Idomeneo and Emilio de' Cavalieri's Rappresentazione were produced there 1956 and 1968. He wrote mainly on Mozart.

Works Opera Das heisse Eisen (after Hans Sachs), Die Höhle von Salamanca (after Cervantes, 1923), Rossini in Neapel (1935), Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts (after Eichendorff's novel).

Stage music ballet Pagoden; incidental music to Shakespeare's King Lear and Twelfth Night (on old English tunes), Goethe's Faust, and Gozzi's Turandot.
