Payne, Anthony (1936– )

English composer and critic. He studied at Durham University 1958–61, and worked as a music critic for the Daily Telegraph from 1965. He has written on Schoenberg and British composers.

Choral

Phoenix Mass for chorus and brass (1965–72); song cycle First Sight of her and After for 16 voices (texts by Hardy, 1975).

Orchestral

Concerto for Orchestra (1975); Songs and Dances for strings (1984); Half Heard in the Stillness for orchestra (1987); Time's Arrow for orchestra (1990).

Chamber

Sonatas and Ricercars for wind quintet (1971); The World's Winter for soprano and eight instruments (text by Tennyson, 1976); string quartet (1978); Spring's Shining Wake for chamber orchestra (1981); Sea-Change septet (1988); Symphonies of Wind and Rain for ensemble (1993).
