Payson

Town in Gila County, central Arizona, USA, in the Tonto National Forest, 92 km/57 mi northeast of Phoenix; population (1990) 8,400. Situated in a wooded, lakeland area south of the Mogollon Rim, it is a tourist centre and popular summer retreat for Phoenix residents. Originally a gold mining town in the 1880s, Payson later developed ranching and lumbering industries. The novelist Zane Grey lived and wrote here in the 1920s.

Payson

Town in Utah County, northern-central Utah, 24 km/15 mi southwest of Provo; population (1990) 9,600. Situated in an irrigated agricultural area, it is a market and processing centre for locally-produced sugar beets, onions, alfalfa, eggs, and fruit, and has railway workshops. The community was settled by Mormons in 1850.
