Peace River

Peace River

Town in northwestern Alberta, Canada, at the confluence of the Peace and Smoky rivers, 386 km/240 mi northwest of Edmonton; population (1991) 6,700. It is a trade and distribution centre, shipping Peace River valley grain and livestock. The Rocky Mountains Forest Reserve lies nearby. Originally known as Peace River Crossing, it became established as a ferry and rail crossing point for the region. Although missions were sited here from 1879, permanent settlement began only in 1913.

In 1793 it was the base for Alexander Mackenzie's expedition into the Northwest.
