peace pipe

Tobacco pipe ritually used by American Indian peoples. It was handed round assemblies of warriors at the conclusion of peace negotiations or other important ceremonies. Nowadays, it is offered to strangers as a mark of hospitality.

The pipe has a long stem of wood, usually with a stone bowl, and may be decorated with women's hair or eagle feathers.
