Peckham

Area in the borough of Southwark in London, England.

Peckham's population is predominantly Afro-Caribbean. Although it is still a relatively poor and disadvantaged area, there have been attempts in recent years to revitalize the neighbourhood, especially through the allocation of funds from the European Union (EU), some of which was spent on building the futuristic Peckham Library (1999), which was designed by English architect Will Alsop and won the Stirling Prize for Architecture in 2000. The urban renewal of Peckham formed part of a more general revitalization of the South Bank area and of Southwark, which included the opening, in 2000, of the nearby Tate Modern gallery.
