Pecos

River in southern USA; length 1,490 km/926 mi. It rises in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northeast New Mexico, and flows southeast through Texas, to join the Rio Grande, 55 km/34 mi northwest of Del Rio. Its principal importance is as a source of irrigation.

Important dams on the river are Alamogordo, Avalon, McMillan, and Red Bluff. Cotton, fruit, and cattle are produced locally.
