In certain musical instruments, mechanical devices which require manipulation by the feet. Pedals may actually produce notes, as in the organ; they may be a means of obtaining certain effects of tone, as in the sustaining and soft piano pedals; or they may be used to alter the length, and thus the tuning, of strings, as in the harp.
