Peekskill| Town in Westchester County, southeastern New York State, USA, on the east bank of the Hudson River, 64 km/40 mi north of New York; population (1990) 19,500. It is a trading centre and tourist base for the Palisades recreational region. Heavily industrialized in the 19th century, varied industries remain, but the town is attempting to revitalize itself as a residential and artistic community. It was founded as a trading post in 1654. |
| Peekskill developed initially as an agricultural market and river port, and served as headquarters for the US general Israel Putnam (1718–1790) during the American Revolution; in 1777 the town was burned by the British. |
