Peking Opera

The most famous type of regional theatre in China, dating from 1790. A simple stage design contrasts with complex costumery, make-up, and acting. Peking Opera consists of dialogue sections and singing with orchestral accompaniment (dominated by Chinese ‘fiddles’, such as the erhu, and the pipa plucked lute). There are well over 1,000 items in the repertory which fall into two categories: the wen (civilian) portraying love stories or social matters; and the wu, the military exploits of heroes or brigands.
