Pelée Island

Island and township in Lake Erie, southern Ontario, Canada, 24 km/15 mi southwest of Point Pelée and 26 km/16 mi southwest of Leamington; area 47 sq km/18 sq mi; population (1991) 300. Extending about 14 km/9 mi north–south and 6 km/4 mi in width, it is the largest island in the lake. Pelée has vineyards and is a thriving resort, favoured in particular by visitors from Ohio, USA; in the summer its population quadruples. A brief pheasant shooting season takes place in the autumn.

Ferry links connect Pelée with Sandusky, Ohio, and ports in Ontario. Middle Island, 5 km/3 mi to the south, is Canada's southernmost point.
