Pell, William (1946– )

US tenor. He studied at the Manhattan School of Music, New York, and sang first as a baritone, performing Don Giovanni, Mozart's Figaro (at Toronto), and Germont (at San Francisco). He sang tenor roles from 1975, making his debut as Rodolfo. He appeared with the Deutsche Oper, Berlin from 1982, and in 1987 was heard in the first performance of Rihm's Oedipus and as Siegfried. He sang Berg's Alwa at Hanover in 1988, and between 1989 and 1991 appeared at Bayreuth as Parsifal. Other roles include Bacchus, Gounod's Roméo, and Jimmy in Mahagonny (Frankfurt, 1990).
