Pelléas et Mélisande

Incidental music by Gabriel Fauré for Maurice Maeterlinck's play of the same name. It was first produced in London at the Prince of Wales Theatre, on 21 June 1898.

Opera by Claude Debussy (libretto from Maeterlinck's play, slightly altered), produced at the Opéra-Comique, Paris, on 30 April 1902. In the story, Married to Golaud, Mélisande falls in love with Pelléas. Golaud soon becomes jealous, and the lovers realize the futility of their situation. After their last meeting, Pelléas is killed by Golaud, and later Mélisande dies, having borne Golaud a child.

Symphonic poem after Maeterlinck by Arnold Schoenberg, Op. 5, composed in 1902 and first performed at Vienna, on 26 January 1905.

Incidental music, an orchestral suite in nine movements, by Sibelius, Op. 46, composed in 1905 and produced at Helsinki on 17 March 1905.
