penitence

In the Christian church, true sorrow for sin and the asking for God's forgiveness. In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus taught his followers to ask God to ‘forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us’. An important part of many church services is the opportunity for the confession of sins and absolution (forgiveness).
