Pennington County

County of southwestern South Dakota, USA; area 7,208 sq km/2,783 sq mi; population (1990) 81,300. Its seat and principal industrial centre is Rapid City. The Cheyenne River traverses the area, and the western portion is crossed by the Black Hills. It is a farming and ranching region, with substantial mineral wealth. Grain, livestock, timber, granite, and gold are produced. Pennington County has a thriving tourist industry; it is the site of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and parts of the Black Hills National Forest and Badlands National Park lie within its bounds.
