Pennsylvania Avenue

Road in Washington DC, USA, running between Georgetown to the northwest and Anacostia to the southeast. It is the route of the presidential inaugural parade and many other processions. After passing in front of the White House (Number 1600), it turns and proceeds to Capitol Hill. It then resumes again southeast of the Capitol, and runs through southeast Washington, where it is a major commercial street. Having entered Maryland, it becomes the Marlboro Pike after crossing the Beltway.

Pennsylvania Avenue

Commercial road in Baltimore, Maryland, formerly running southeast–northwest, between the downtown area and Druid Hill Park. Throughout most of the early 20th century it was the focal street of Baltimore's black American community, but urban renewal in the 1970s removed most of the thoroughfare.

Areas to the west of the avenue were traditionally the heartland of Baltimore's black American population, although much of the community, comprising 57% of the city's inhabitants in 1990, now lives in the more integrated northeastern and parts of the northwestern districts of the city.

I saw young coloured men who were not earning more than four dollars a week spend two dollars or more for a buggy on Sunday to ride up and down Pennsylvania Avenue in, in order that they might try to convince the world that they were worth thousands.
When my odd friend Riley and I were newspaper correspondents in Washington, in the winter of '67, we were coming down Pennsylvania Avenue one night, near midnight, in a driving storm of snow, when the flash of a street-lamp fell upon a man who was eagerly tearing along in the opposite direction.
There were darkies and loafers and hackmen, and also vague individuals, the loosest and blankest he had ever seen anywhere, with tufts on their chins, toothpicks in their mouths, hands in their pockets, rumination in their jaws and diamond pins in their shirt-fronts, who looked as if they had sauntered over from Pennsylvania Avenue to while away half an hour, forsaking for that interval their various slanting postures in the porticoes of the hotels and the doorways of the saloons.
