Penobscot County

County of eastern-central Maine, USA; area 8,884 sq km/3,430 sq mi; population (1990) 146,000. Bangor, in the south, is the county seat. The region is drained by the Penobscot River, and includes numerous lakes. Activities in the sparsely populated north include lumbering, hunting, and fishing. The economy of the Bangor area is centred on agriculture and the manufacture of pulp, paper, wood products, textiles, and boats.
