Penrhyn Castle

Huge neo-Norman castle near Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales, designed in 1820–40 by Thomas Hopper (1776–1856). Penrhyn was given to the National Trust in 1951 by the Treasury, with the 17,000-ha/41,989-acre Ysbyty Estate. The castle contains ‘Norman’ furniture, panelling, and plasterwork designed by Hopper, and one of the best private collections of paintings in Wales.

There are also collections of dolls, stuffed birds, and animals; an exhibition of locomotives in the grounds; and a Victorian walled garden.

The keep is said to have been inspired by Castle Hedingham in Essex.
