Penrith

Town in Cumbria, England, 28 km/17 mi southeast of Carlisle, on a hilly site above the River Eamont; population (2001) 14,500. Penrith manufactures agricultural machinery. The M6 motorway runs immediately to the west of the town and Penrith railway station is on the main London–Glasgow line.

There are ruins of a 15th-century castle, and an 18th-century church.
