Penthesilea

In Greek mythology, daughter of Ares the god of war, queen of the Amazons, and ally of the Trojans in the war against the Greeks. She was killed by the Greek warrior Achilles, who mourned her death, and she appears with him as a subject in Greek art, and in a play by the German dramatist Heinrich Kleist.

Penthesilea

Opera by Othmar Schoeck (libretto by composer, based on Heinrich von Kleist's drama), produced at Dresden on 8 January 1927. In the story, Achilles falls in love with the Amazon Queen Penthesilea, whom he has defeated in combat. When she recovers from her wounds, she becomes deranged and kills Achilles. After coming to her senses she commits suicide.

Also,a symphonic poem on the same story by Hugo Wolf, composed 1883–85.
