Penticton

Town in southern British Columbia, Canada, on the Okanagan River, at the southern end of Okanagan Lake, 54 km/34 mi north of the Washington US border, and 265 km/165 mi east of Vancouver; population (1991) 27,300. Fruit growing is long-established in the area, the first orchards being planted here in 1874. Industries include fruit canning, packing, and distribution; lumbering and the manufacture of wood products; winemaking; ranching; and tourism. Visitor facilities include nearby beaches and ski slopes.

Penticton is also the seat of Okanagan College, and the site of a Native Canadian reserve.
