Pentrich Rising

Unsuccessful rising against the British government by a group of rebels from Pentrich, Derbyshire, on 9 June 1819. Thinking that they were part of a wider uprising, the rebels marched to attack Nottingham. In fact, they had been tricked into rebelling by William Oliver (‘Oliver the Spy’), a government agent provocateur. No shots were fired and, realizing their mistake, they tried to return. However, they were captured and tried; 23 were found guilty of treason, 4 were hanged, and the rest were transported to Australia.
