Perahia, Murray

Perahia, Murray (1947– )

US pianist and conductor. He is noted for urbane interpretations of Chopin, Schumann, and Mendelssohn. He has recorded all of the Mozart piano concertos with the English Chamber Orchestra, conducting from the keyboard.

Born in New York, he studied piano from the age of four and later conducted at the Mannes School with Artur Balsam. He was the first American to win the Leeds International Piano Competition, in 1972.
