Pereda, José Maria de (1833–1906)| Spanish novelist. His novels are pictures of the follies of his contemporaries, more particularly descriptions of people and places of his native Santander. They include Escenas montañesas/Mountain Scenes (two series, 1864, 1871); Sotileza 1855, a story of the sailors and fishermen of Santander; and Peñas arriba/Up in the Mountains 1894, about a small mountain village. His Don Gonzalo González de la Gonzalera 1879 is a politico-social satire. |
