Pereslavl-Zalesski

Town in the Yaroslavl oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, on Lake Pleshcheyevo, 125 km/78 mi northeast of Moscow; population (2001 est) 44,500.

The town of Pereslavl-Zalesski was founded by Yuri Dolgoruki in 1152 as a fortress. Alexander Nevsky, ruler of the medieval city-state of Novgorod, was born here in about 1220. In 1688–93, on Pereslavl Lake (now Lake Pleshcheyevo), Peter (I) the Great built his ‘toy’ fleet of around 100 vessels, to study navigation and shipbuilding techniques; from this, the Russian navy originated.

There are a number of fine churches and monuments in Pereslavl-Zalesski, including the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour (1152–57), and four monastic complexes dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.
