Perfall, Karl von (1824–1907)

German composer and administrator. In 1864 he became Intendant of the court music at Munich and also of the court theatres in 1867. In spite of personal differences with Wagner, he mounted 700 performances of his operas in 25 years.

He studied at Leipzig with Moritz Hauptmann, returned to Munich in 1850, and founded an oratorio society in 1854.

Opera and stage

operas Sakuntala (after Kalidasa, 1853), Das Konterfei (1863), Raimondin (Melusine, 1881), and Junker Heinz (1886); incidental music for Shakespeare's Pericles.

Choral and orchestral

fairy tales for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra; Dornröschen, Undine (after Fouqué), and Rübezahl; choruses, songs.
