Perim Island

Island in the strait of Bab al Mandab, the southern entrance to the Red Sea, 2.5 km/1.5 mi from the coast of Arabia and 155 km/96 mi west of Aden; area 13 sq km/5 sq mi. It is part of Yemen.

The British occupied it in 1857 because of its proximity to the Suez Canal and it remained a coaling station until 1936. There is no fresh water available and little vegetation.
