Pirithous

In Greek mythology, a king of the Lapiths; son of Ixion; and friend of the hero Theseus. His marriage to Hippodamia was the occasion of a battle between the Lapiths and their guests, the Centaurs, who attempted to abduct the bride and other female guests. The ensuing fight, led by Theseus, became a recurrent subject of Greek art.

After Hippodamia's death, Pirithous and Theseus decided that each should wed a daughter of Zeus. Theseus picked Helen and Pirithous chose Persephone, queen of the underworld. Together they made their way to Hades, where they were seized by Pluto and fastened to a rock. Theseus was delivered by Heracles but Pirithous remained for eternity.
