peritonitis

Inflammation of the peritoneum (the membrane lining the abdominal cavity). It may be due to bacterial infection which is spread in the bloodstream, or it may arise from chemical irritation due to a perforated ulcer or ruptured appendix. It may also arise spontaneously due to accumulation of fluid (ascites) in liver disease or advanced cancer. Symptoms include abdominal pain and distension, fever and shock. The underlying disease is treated and antibiotics are given for infection.
