Red Bay

Small community situated in the extreme southeast corner of Labrador, Canada; population (1991) 300. It stands on the north shore of the Strait of Belle Isle. The community, named for its prominent red cliffs, relies on fishing. Red Bay is the site of a Basque whaling colony founded in the 1540s; well-preserved remains of the whaler San Juan (1565) and other shipwrecks of the period have been found offshore.
