Pertwee, Jon (1919-1996)

English actor. Best known for his starring roles on television in Doctor Who (1970-74), Worzel Gummidge (1979-82), and Worzel Gummidge Down Under (1987, 1989), he originally made his name during World War II in the radio series HMS Waterlogged (later Waterlogged Spa). His films include three Carry On pictures and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966).

Pertwee was born in London, the son of playwright Roland Pertwee. While working on the film Knock on Wood (1954), he stood in for Danny Kaye in the London scenes. He also enjoyed radio success with Up the Pole and The Navy Lark.
