Peshtigo

Town in Marinette County, northeastern Wisconsin, USA, 8 km/5 mi west of Green Bay, Lake Michigan, and 10 km/6 mi southwest of Marinette; population (1990) 2,800. Principally a resort town, it was formerly a major lumber centre on the Peshtigo River in the 19th century. On 8 October 1871, the same night as the great Chicago fire, Peshtigo was at the centre of one of the worst forest fires in US history, which killed over 1,200 and devastated the town.
