pet

Animal kept for companionship and occasionally for status. Research suggests that interaction with a pet induces relaxation (slower heart rate and lower blood pressure). In 16th-17th century Europe, keeping animals in this way was thought suggestive of witchcraft.

AnAustralian study in 1992 found that pet owners had lower cholesterol levels than non-pet owners with comparable lifestyles.
