Petaluma

Town in Sonoma County, northwest California; population (2000) 54,600. It is located 32 mi/52 km north of San Francisco, on the Petaluma River. It is an agricultural center for poultry and dairy products. Other industries include winemaking and the production of feed, fertilizers, and a wide variety of light manufactures. Settled by Mexicans in 1833, Petaluma is now also a growing residential suburb.
