Petawawa

Town in Renfrew County, southeastern Ontario, Canada, on the Petawawa River and Allumette Lake (a widening of the Ottawa River), 137 km/85 mi northwest of Ottawa and 16 km/10 mi northwest of Pembroke; population (1991) 5,800. It is the site of a Canadian military base, home to airborne and other units. The installation developed from a summer militia camp held in 1905, which later became a major staging and training base for world wars I and II.
