Seeger, Pete (Peter) (1919– )

US folk singer and songwriter. He wrote anti-war protest songs, such as ‘Where Have All the Flowers Gone?’ (1956), ‘If I Had a Hammer’ (1949), and ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’ (1965).

Seeger was active in left-wing politics from the late 1930s and was a victim of the witch-hunt of Senator Joe McCarthy in the 1950s. As a member of the vocal group the Weavers in 1948–58, he made popular a variety of songs of diverse ethnic origin and had several hits.
