Peter Grimes

Opera by Benjamin Britten (libretto by M Slater, based on part of George Crabbe's poem ‘The Borough’), produced in London at Sadler's Wells, on 7 June 1945. In the story, the fisherman Peter Grimes is accused of murder when his apprentices keep dying. Only Ellen Orford has faith in him, but that is not enough to stop the villagers from hounding him until he drowns himself.
