Peter I Island

Uninhabited island in the Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctica, belonging to Norway since 1931; area 180 sq km/69 sq mi.

The ice-covered island is about 24 km/15 mi long and 8 km/5 mi wide, lying in 68° 50' south, 90° 35' west. Lars Christensen Peak (1,210 m/3,970 ft) is the highest point. The island was discovered by a Russian naval expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen in 1821. Norway claimed sovereignty by royal proclamation in 1931.
