Petersham

Town in Worcester County, central Massachusetts, on the Swift River, 40 km/25 mi northwest of Worcester; population (1998 est) 1,200. In February 1787, it was the site of the final battle of Shays's Rebellion, an insurrection of farmers protesting high taxes and low prices for farm goods, led by Daniel Shays.

Petersham's founders of 1733 were veterans from wars against the French and the Native Americans and the settlement was called Volunteerstown. Later the American Indian name, Nichewaug, was used. It was incorporated as Petersham in 1754.

Local features include the 840-ha/2,100-acre Harvard Forest and a bird sanctuary. Quabbin Reservoir lies to the southwest.
